Jeff Prudhomme

Jeff Prudhomme’s academic training is in philosophy and religious studies.  His scholarly interests focus on the exploration of the fundamental concepts that shape the way we think and the way we experience the world.  He has long been interested in interdisciplinary approaches to complex subject matters and in the ways that philosophical deliberation might connect with public life. He maintains a wide range of public policy interests, including the multidimensional impacts of technology, issues pertaining to the realities of a pluralistic and democratic society, and issues pertaining to education, health, the environment and social justice.

Prudhomme served previously as the Director of Frostburg State University’s Institute for Service-Learning, an Institute dedicated to situating student learning within an expansive and active sense of citizenship.  He also taught philosophy part-time at Frostburg State.  Prior to that he taught for four years at Wesleyan College (Georgia), where he received the Quillian Award for excellence in teaching.  He also taught philosophy at James Madison University while serving as a Post-Doctoral Fellow for Critical Thinking.  In this capacity he participated in the revision of the University’s general education program.  Prior to that appointment, he taught a graduate seminar at the University of Virginia and served for two years as a public school teacher.

Prudhomme’s doctoral work focused on the interconnections of philosophical and religious reflection in western thought, and he received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the Religious Studies program of the University of Virginia.  He completed other graduate studies during two years spent at the Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany, under the auspices of a Fulbright scholarship.  He graduated with a B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from The University of the South.  Prudhomme’s publications include a book on the philosopher Martin Heidegger as well as shorter articles and translations.
