One Response to “Practical Tips for Citizen Discussions: Part 1-Recruitment”

  1. Dennis,I really agree with your statement that there are ‘people who are hungry for this sort of thing.” In fact I’ve been somewhat surprised by how much people enjoy ‘real’ discussion. While they almost all question the purpose of the group at first (I usually joke that this isn’t an Amway meeting), they quickly let go of any reservations they might have initially had and then relax and enjoy the discussion. This has proven true no matter the age, gender or background of the participants.  I ask for closing comments at the end of each session and one student in an all college group said, “I was surprised that you really wanted us to talk. I thought we would be listening to you.” A stay-at-home mother of two small children said she loved the chance to have ‘adult’ conversation for a change.
