How Will We All Retire?

Editor - Adolf Gundersen

The retirement project discussions explored retirement as an area of public policy concern. This project and its group discussions explored–and developed multiple and contrasting ideas and responses to–some important underlying concerns and issues about retirement. These concerns include–

  • Moral Concerns. For example, what is the ultimate purpose for retirement? Why might people deserve retirement, and why might others be required to retire? How can we adjust retirement to meet differing individual needs and interests? And who and how should we pay for retirement?
  • Economic Concerns. How can we make it financially secure; how can we guarantee it for those who are deserving, or should we? How can we protect standards of living for retirees? How can we help individuals plan and save for retirement? How do different policies on retirement affect economic growth and job opportunities for others? How can we help or relieve employers (both public and private) from the costs of retirement, or should we?
  • Lifestyle & Community Concerns. How can we help retirees to remain active and connected? And help address their needs for adequate health care, housing, safety, transportation/access, etc.? How might our policy choices encourage caring for elders? How might we help retirees adapt to changing technology?
  • Political Concerns. How can retirement benefits be protected over the long term from those who might seek to limit or eliminate them? How can we best make use of available community resources for retirees without damaging or exhausting them in the process?

The discussion report “How Will We All Retire?” was developed out of a longer term project discussion in 2002-2004 that produced an initial draft set of policy possibilities. A second, follow-up series of discussions was held in December 2009 by a different IF fellow, and the further comments and editorial development arising from this second, later set of discussions was used to prepare this discussion report.
