Should everyone have equal civil rights? This group felt that civil rights should be based on the highest morality of the people and the people have a civic responsibility to enforce those rights for all US citizens. Exceptions should be considered and made on a case by case basis such as in the instance of deciding rights of illegal immigrants. However, the group felt that black people in this country often still feel disenfranchised and unequal in basic rights of their counterparts. Issues such as the expiration of civil rights for certain groups, and in particular black people, should be behind us as a nation. Beyond civil rights, there is a need to establish basic human rights that all people regardless of their “group” should have and it is up to all of us to have an ongoing dialog to challenge the status quo, run for office, stand up for justice and to protect those that can’t protect themselves.
