Civic Collaborative Discussion: Surfacing Community Concerns and Values
How can we identify the needs and priorities of a community, rather than just those of the individuals within it?
Featuring Collaborative Discussion Project (CDP) Visiting Fellow Dr. Lori Britt, this Civic Collaborative Discussion Workshop invites participants to explore how we can use publicly available information to uncover collective values, concerns, and priorities at the community level.
You’ll get an exclusive introduction to a brand-new activity from the free Collaborative Discussion Toolkit—not yet publicly released—designed to help participants interpret public data in ways that promote civic collaboration and support civic action. You’ll also receive guidance on how to facilitate this activity yourself in settings such as classrooms, meetings, or community groups.
Lori is Director of Communication Studies at James Madison University and Co‑Director of ICAD. She brings deep expertise in civic dialogue and systems thinking, and her facilitation helps people navigate complexity with care and curiosity. Read an interview with Lori here.
During this workshop, you will:
- Explore how public information can surface community-level concerns, priorities, and values
- Consider how to involve community members in conversations grounded in shared concerns
- Gain tools and strategies to lead this activity in classrooms, workplaces, and communities
- Receive an introduction to the free CDP Toolkit and how it can be used to foster inclusive dialogue and civic collaboration in classrooms, communities, and beyond
Whether you’re an educator, facilitator, civic leader, or community builder, this workshop will help you move from isolated perspectives to shared understanding, laying the groundwork for responsive and connected civic action.
